One Year On for Katie & Naomi: What Working with SME Businesses Has Taught Us About Marketing

Why do some businesses seem to attract customers effortlessly while others struggle to stand out?

Most businesses don’t have a marketing specific problem, they have a messaging problem.

They know what to do. They know they’re good at it. But when it comes to explaining why someone should choose them, what makes them different or how to communicate with consistency, that’s where businesses get stuck.

Over the past year, we’ve (Katie & Naomi) had the opportunity to work and learn from a range of businesses across Scotland, from charities, manufacturers to family run businesses.

Although every business is completely different, there are some common challenges that appear time and time again.

Building trust, how to get more enquiries and sales and how to make your business stand out online.

As we’ve reached one year working at Due North Creatives, we’ve been reflecting on everything we’ve learn’t. More than anything, working with so many different businesses has shown us that successful marketing doesn’t start with a website, a social media post or a video.

It starts with understanding the story behind the business.

Every business has a story worth telling

Two smiling women stand in a bright modern kitchen. One holds a professional camera on a stabiliser, while the other stands beside her. There are chairs, a worktop, and some papers in the background.

Websites, videos and social media content are important, but they only work when they’re built around a clear understanding of the business: its journey, its people, its values and the difference it makes.

We came into Due North Creatives from very different backgrounds, Katie brought eight years of experience in the film industry while Naomi had spent seven years working in in-house marketing roles.

Despite those different experiences, we’ve both discovered the same thing: the businesses that connect best with their customers are the ones that aren’t afraid to show the people, passion and purpose behind what they do.

Our role isn’t to invent that story. It’s to uncover it and help others see why it matters

So before posting your next social media post or blog, ask yourself:

‘What is something that makes our business us?’

The answer probably isn’t your product or service. It could be why the business began, the challenges you’ve overcome, the people behind it or the way you support your customers and community.

That’s where the most compelling stories are usually found.

Getting behind the scenes changes everything

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned this year is that the most valuable part of any content day often happens before the camera even starts rolling. Having conversations beforehand is where that story really comes from”

“Whether we’ve been filming with Montrose Community Trust to capture the incredible work they do in the local community, creating recruitment videos with Raeburn & Christie Clark or producing reels with Cerretti Electrical and Cairnview Windows & Doors, every business has had something unique that customers would never have discovered without conversations and time to sit down and figure out what makes each of them unique.”

“I’ve spent eight years working in the film industry, so storytelling has always been something I’ve loved. But this year has reinforced that the stories people connect with are the ones that most businesses don’t draw attention to. The little details, how it started, the hard times, how your businesses help others, it’s all part of your story and your own unique brand. Sometimes it just takes asking the right questions to uncover them.”

Your achievements deserve to be seen

“One project that’s really stood out to me this year has been helping clients prepare award submissions.”

“So many businesses are focused on what’s next that they rarely stop to recognise how far they’ve already come.”

“When you’re immersed in your business every day, it’s easy to overlook the achievements, challenges you’ve overcome and impact you’ve made. Yet those are often the very things that help customers trust you.”

“One of the most rewarding parts of my role has been helping clients become more comfortable talking about those achievements. Not because it’s about shouting the loudest, but because if you don’t tell your story, someone else will tell theirs instead. The best marketing isn’t about exaggerating success. It’s about helping businesses recognise the value that’s already there.”

Fresh perspectives make better marketing

Six men in suits stand smiling on a stage with colourful lights and a starry backdrop. One man in a light beige suit holds a green and yellow award.

One lesson we’ve both taken away this year is that it’s incredibly difficult to see your own business the way your customers do. When you’re working in your business every day, everything feels normal. The story that feels ordinary to you is often the exact thing that makes customers choose you. That’s why having fresh perspectives matters.

Whether that’s from your own team challenging ideas, or working with external marketing, asking the right questions helps you uncover opportunities you can’t see when you’re too close to them.

It’s something we experience within our business every day too. Sharing ideas, challenging each other and learning together helps us bring stronger thinking and better solutions to every client we work with.

Great marketing starts long before the final product

Looking back on our first year at Due North Creatives, the biggest lesson isn’t about websites, branding, video or social media.

It’s that great marketing starts with understanding people.

Before any strategy is created, before the camera starts rolling or the website is designed, the businesses that see the best results are the ones willing to take a step back and understand what makes them different.

Before the strategy is developed, the camera starts rolling or the website is designed, you need to understand what makes the business different  and why that difference matters to the people you want to reach.

When you can clearly communicate your story, your values and the real impact of your work, you give people a reason to trust you.

So, ask yourself one simple question:

If someone discovered my business today, would they understand why they should choose us?

If the answer isn’t an immediate “yes”, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common challenges we see, and it’s often where the biggest opportunities for growth begin.

As we head into our second year working at Due North Creatives, that’s the lesson we’ll continue carrying with us. Every business already has a story worth telling, you just need to ask yourself the right questions and a fresh perspective to bring it to life.
